Mt. Ruapehu Ski Fields

90 minutes from Taupo is Mt. Ruapehu which has brillant skiing and snowboarding, with the longest vertical drop in Australasia. Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields are located in a Dual World Heritage Area and have the highest lift access terrain in New Zealand. Whakapapa and Turoa, have a combined area of 1050 hectares, the largest skiable area in New Zealand. There is an excellent variety of terrain to suit all levels of skiers, with one run 4 kilometres long. Both ski fields feature Happy Valley and Alpine Meadow for learners, with special areas for tobogganning and tubing. The result, a remedy for one very good time!

The 4WD access road turns off the desert road at a signpost about 20km north of Waiouru. It is nine kilometres to the car park and from there 4WD require chains, or it is possible to get picked up at this point.
