A place full of Variety
The greater Taupo region has some amazing areas of significant geological features. Thermal wonderlands and natural hot springs sprawl throughout the Taupo Volcanic Zone, which stretches from White Island to Tongariro National Park. Geothermal features within the district orignate from the arrival of our Tangata Whenua to Aotearoa (New Zealand) .Beautiful mountains, crystal waters and plush greenery are taonga (treasures) to all within our district and especially to our local Ngati Tuwharetoa The Tuwharetoa people are the tribal grouping of the Lake Taupo region and have a wealth of stories and traditions unique to this part of Aotearoa (New Zealand).
In New Zealand our Tangata Whenua (people of the land) of times gone by, shaped what is here today. There are many historical happenings that have been interpreted in a variety of ways and stories have been past on from generation to generation. All our Tangata Whenua share a healthy respect and love of our whenua (land) and much of our history has close connections to land.
Throughout the communities of Taupo, Turangi and Mangakino lie stories of days gone by. These stories have shaped our region to what greets you today.
